19th Century Marquetry And Gilt Bronze Bedside Table By François Linke – Napoleon III Period
Artist: François Linke
A rare Louis XV style bedside table in fine marquetry, definitively attributable to François Linke (1855–1946), one of the greatest Parisian cabinetmakers of the late 19th century, whose bronze mounts are signed “FL”. This piece rests on four elegantly cabriole legs, richly adorned with finely chased gilt bronze mounts, including foliate drops, sabots, and rocaille-style side fittings. The front features three molded drawers, highlighted with light stringing and fitted with bronze handles, and a pull-out slide on the side with patinated red leather. The drawer interiors are made of varnished solid mahogany. The shaped top is edged with a gilt bronze molding, resting on marquetry of precious woods with a floral motif, executed with great finesse. The curved sides and back are also veneered and decorated, attesting to the meticulous craftsmanship on all surfaces, characteristic of François Linke's high-quality pieces.
