Engraved Silver Reliquary Cross That Opens, 19th Century
Engraved silver reliquary cross that opens, 19th century
An elegant silver reliquary cross that opens, entirely hand-engraved on both sides with symbolic Christian motifs. The obverse features the Marian monogram “M A” framing a Sacred Heart, while the reverse is adorned with the IHS monogram, the emblem of Christ, accompanied by finely chiseled plant motifs.
Both sides are also decorated with a patriarchal cross, branches, and stylized elements evoking hope and Christ’s victory.
The cross opens via a side hinge and closes with a small screw, revealing a compartment designed to hold a relic or a small devotional memento. It is currently empty.
A fine-quality piece, likely French, dating from the second half of the 19th century. The silver has been tested.
Condition:
Very good condition; the hinge and screw closure function perfectly. Interior is empty. Some slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
