Description
A rare carved Asmat head from the prestigious collection of Jean-Pierre Dutilleux, a leading figure in the discovery and promotion of indigenous peoples.
Carved from wood with a beautiful patina of age, this ancestral head captivates with the purity of its lines and the power of its expression. The face, deliberately simplified, features a high forehead, deeply incised almond-shaped eyes, a powerful nose, a full mouth, and a prominent chin. This formal simplicity lends the work a sculptural presence of remarkable intensity.
The top of the skull bears an ancient cut, indicating that it was originally the preserved part of a larger ritual sculpture. Today, this fragment possesses a true aesthetic autonomy and stands as an authentic testament to the art of the Asmat sculptors.
Among the Asmat, human representations embody the ancestors and occupy an essential place in ceremonies and the memory of lineages. This sculpture perfectly illustrates the expressive power that characterizes this art form, now recognized in the world’s leading ethnographic collections.
Its provenance is particularly remarkable. Not only does this head come from the collection of Jean-Pierre Dutilleux, but it is also featured on page 161 of the book *TRIBUS* and was displayed in the exhibition *Le Monde Premier*—two factors that considerably enhance its historical and documentary significance.
