Genryūsai Seiya (源龍斎 誠谷), Attributed / Circle Of – Group Of The Two Fighting Tigers, Meiji Bronze
A spectacular patinated bronze animal group signed Genryūsai Seiya, depicting two tigers engaged in an exceptionally intense struggle. Designed to appeal to the international tastes of the late 19th century, this dynamic composition develops a powerful dramatic tension, akin to grand Western animal sculpture, while retaining the technical virtuosity characteristic of Japanese bronze casters of the Meiji era. The spiraling construction of the bodies, the precise anatomical modeling, and the subtle interplay of different patinas accentuating the relief of the fur all testify to remarkable mastery. The striking expressions of the heads, with their open jaws and intense gazes, reflect a keen naturalistic observation, characteristic of Seiya's works intended for major international exhibitions. The quality of the casting is also evident in rarely seen areas: a fully worked underside, finely detailed paw pads, and a signature plaque integrated into the modeling of the back, confirming a meticulous production consistent with high-level Meiji bronzes. The attention to detail extends to the tips of the tails, finely adorned with tufts of fur, revealing a particularly careful finish. Deep brown patina with warm undertones.
