Dan Spoon From Ivory Coast
Exceptional "Wakemia" ceremonial spoon from the Dan Lümei people of Ivory Coast. Solid hardwood with a beautiful patina from use. Brown hues tending towards maroon. Length 59cm. I note a crack on each side of the face, otherwise in very good condition. Among the Dan, a woman who owns such a spoon is reputed to be competent and generous. The expectations placed on her are therefore high; according to these, she is supposed to be hospitable to all. It is believed that the spirit that helps the hostess take care of her guests manifests itself in the spoon. During each ceremony, the fortunate owner of the spoon brandishes it with pride and honor. The piece I am offering is of exceptional and rare quality, surely made by a great master sculptor. The glossy patina in places demonstrates the long use it has enjoyed. Superb collector's item.
