Georges Briata, born January 5, 1933 in Marseille and died December 7, 2019 in Marseille, was a French painter.
He entered the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille. He was awarded the Stanilas-Torrents prize and the Poggioli prize in 1947.
After attending the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris to prepare for the Prix de Rome - which he did not win -
he chose to pursue a more stable career by taking the path of the decorative arts, thinking of becoming a decorator or advertiser.
He won first place in the competitive examination for the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris in 1951, graduating with a diploma in mural art.
In 1955, he attended the workshop of Marcel Gromaire, who had a profound influence on his work.In 1960, he became a professor at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille. Among the members of the competition jury was sculptor Paul Belmondo.
Then he met André Maurice at the Jouvène gallery in Marseille, where he exhibited regularly until 1990. He met other painters, poets and journalists such as Guy Charon, Raymond Guerrier, Eugène Ionesco, Albert Lauzero, André Roussin, Axel Toursky and Jacques Winsberg.As success came, he exhibited all over the world: Tokyo, New York, Montreal, Geneva, Beirut, Boston, Grand Rapid's, Miami Beach, Lyon, Paris.He became a member of the Académie des sciences, lettres et arts de Marseille on March 15, 2006.
