Edo Mask From Nigeria
A very interesting, lightweight painted wooden Bini Edo mask from Nigeria, 36cm high. This dance mask represents a clan dignitary. Its role is to ensure the cohesion and protection of the group. Provenance: formerly in the collection of Maurice Nicaud, Paris (1911-2003). The Bini, or Edo, are settled around the town of Benin, in Edo State, south-central Nigeria. Maurice Nicaud, owner in the 1950s of a small transport company operating between Guinea, Mali, and Ivory Coast, was one of the first discoverers of works of art in Africa before becoming a major international dealer.
