Charles Milcendeau 1872–1919

Charles Milcendeau was a French painter and draftsman bornin 1872 in Soullans, in the Vendée region, where he died prematurely in 1919. A student of GustaveMoreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied alongside Henri Matisse, GeorgesRouault, and Albert Marquet, among others. A remarkable draftsman, he first made aname for himself with portraits of great psychological insight, often depictingpeasants and residents of the Vendée Marshes. Deeply attached to hisnative region, he painted its modest interiors, landscapes, andwith an intimate sensitivity and without artificial picturesqueness. Hisnumerous travels, particularly to Spain, also played an essential role inhis work and gradually enriched his palette. His art thus evolved fromprecise, almost austere drawing toward a more luminous and colorful style of painting. Atthe crossroads of realism, the legacy of Moreau, and the modern artistic explorations ofthe early 20th century,Milcendeau developed a highly personal body of work. Having remained relatively independentof the major artistic movements of his time, he is now consideredone of the leading figures in Vendée painting at the turn of thecentury. The Soullans Museum currently houses a significant collection of hisworks.
