LucienWeil 1902–1963, was born in Biesheim, Alsace. A studentof decorative arts in Paris, he competed for the Prix de Rome in 1926 and wonthe second Grand Prix. (That year, there was no First Grand Prix, but two Second GrandPrizes awarded to Lucien Weil and his compatriot Alfred Giess. Hemarried Madeleine Lestienne in 1930, who was also a painter. LucienWeil exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1925. In 1934, hereceived a residency grant from the Académie des Beaux-Arts to stay at the Casa Velázquezin Madrid. This was the crowning achievement of his efforts, allowing him to fullydevelop his art. He stayed in Spain with Madeleine until the summer1935. Both painted numerous works. Through his portraits,nudes, landscapes, and genre scenes, one senses that Lucien Weil was closer to life andcolor.In the summerof ’39, Lucien and Madeleine discovered Erquy and remained devoted to Brittany fortheir lives.LucienWeil is well-versed in all techniques and feels at ease with allsubjects. Still lifes and interiors coexist serenely withsnowy landscapes and seascapes.
