Seditious Object Of Sentiment Recommendation
France, dated 1819
Sculpted mother-of-pearl, vermeil and enamel
Restoration period
Rare sentimental object of recommendation carved in a substantial white mother-of-pearl finely worked in high relief, featuring a fluted and symmetrical decoration of great elegance, characteristic of the refined taste of the early Restoration years.
The central part is adorned with a delicate polychrome enamel motif mounted on vermeil, bringing a precious touch of color to the whole. The base bears a moving engraved inscription dated 1819:
"Rends la heureuse"
This dedication gives the object a deeply intimate and sentimental dimension, most likely evoking a present linked to marriage or the union of two families.
The set is fully in keeping with the visual culture of innuendo that marked the first decades of the XIXᵉ century. Here, the sculptor plays with a secret reading of the form: the lateral recesses are not simply decorative reserves, but discreetly suggest two human presences facing each other.
This image hidden in the voids, perceptible only according to the angle of the gaze and the play of shadows, belongs to an aesthetic of implicit symbolism particularly appreciated under the Restoration. The dialogue between the sentimental inscription engraved in 1819 and this suggested anthropomorphic presence lends the object a rare emotional depth, where sculpture becomes the bearer of an intimate narrative as much as a decorative function.
The mounting bears a period French hallmark for silver, consistent with early XIXᵉ century vermeil work.
