Pair Of Faience Goats From Nevers – 18th Century
A lovely pair of large apothecary jars (*chevrettes*) on pedestal bases, made of Nevers glazed earthenware.
Note the rich decoration featuring abundant floral and foliate motifs in shades of cobalt blue—a color that best withstands the high temperatures required to fire the glaze.
One is labeled "S.F Perficor," standing for *sirop de fleurs de pêcher* (peach blossom syrup), formerly used as a purgative and vermifuge.
The other is labeled "S. Nymph." This is very likely an abbreviation for *Syrupus Nymphaeae* (water lily syrup) or a preparation based on *Nymphaea* (white water lily), a plant historically used for its calming, cooling, and mildly sedative properties. It appeared in various medical formularies during the 17th and 18th centuries.
