Terracotta Sculpture Of The Virgin And Child, 18th Century
This beautiful polychrome terracotta
group depicts Mary seated, holding the naked Child on her left knee
with her two soothing hands.
Her very gentle face is surrounded by a
veil falling over her shoulders.
She is wearing a dress belted under her
chest and a cloak with hems that fall to the front of her knees,
forming deep, harmonious folds.
The mischievous Infant Jesus displays a
slight smile on his doll-like face.
Christ's nudity is covered by a simple,
barely perceptible veil.
This lovely Marian representation rests
on clouds decorated with three cherub heads.
