Delft Earthenware Wall Plate With Blue-and-white Decoration And A Polychrome Frame, Mid-18th Century
Delft earthenware wall plate with blue-and-white decoration and a polychrome frame, mid-18th century
Delft earthenware wall plate with blue-and-white decoration, featuring a polychrome frame integrated into the piece, from the mid-18th century.
The central design depicts an oriental landscape with blooming peonies, painted in cobalt blue. The molded frame is adorned with symmetrical Rococo shell motifs, accented with yellow and iron-red glazes. The combination of a blue-and-white scene and a polychrome Rococo frame is characteristic of mid-18th-century Delft production.
Tiles of this type were designed as decorative panels intended to be hung on the wall. In household inventories of the period, they are often referred to as “porceleine schilderijen” (“porcelain paintings”), reflecting their function as ceramic equivalents of framed paintings and prints in interiors.
