Around 1860. Carved Square Tondo Bas-relief.
A remarkable bas-relief, a portrait of a bearded man in profile, carved from plaster, likely in the second half of the 19th century.
Finely crafted, with unexpected depth, it reflects the spirit of the era, when artists experimented with different media to create original portraits.
It appears to have been framed from the outset in a lovely solid light walnut frame that creates a beautiful contrast with the work’s pale tones.
Although anonymous, it bears all the hallmarks of the finest 19th-century artists.
In excellent original condition, never disassembled.
