"1868. Cyprien Tessie Du Motais And G. Aroza: The Friezes Of The Parthenon. "
The industrial revolution was in full swing in the middle of the 19th century, this folio is in itself a witness to it. Photography, developed for only about twenty years, was limited by the need to make prints by hand, in an artisanal way. An astonishing creator, Cyprien Tessie du Motais (1818-1880), in collaboration with Maréchal, developed a process in 1867, which he called phototype, which allowed the industrialization of photographic prints. Books could now be illustrated with photos, and the postcard at the beginning of the 20th century existed thanks to this process. This work published in 1868, sumptuously illustrated with twenty-two phototypes, shots of the friezes of Phidias at the Parthenon, demonstrates the qualities of the process. One can still be amazed by the stability of the prints, as well as the precision of the rendering. The way is now open for the image to be published. The binding is in good condition, despite some stains on the leather; the paper, of excellent quality for the period, has retained its whiteness.
