Torch-bearing angels
Painted and gilded wood, approx. 93 x 33 x 21 cm
This pair of torch-bearing angels, carved and painted in wood and dating from the 17th century, depicts two ephebe figures carrying light, dressed in long tunics, girdled at the waist and adorned with wide collars and gilded borders that contrast with the antique white background with a marbled effect. The figures, with youthful faces framed by wavy, flowing hair, are depicted standing upright on a circular base and holding a torch with one arm; the torch is shaped like a turned shaft with a gilded chalice-shaped base, crowned by a corolla of metallic leaves designed to hold the flame or candle. Their free hand rests on their chest in a gesture of composure.
Artifacts of this kind were an integral part of the liturgical and decorative furnishings of churches, private chapels, and noble oratories in 17th-century Italy, where they were placed on either side of altars, niches, or altarpiece frames to hold candles and illuminate the sacred compositions during services. The production of torch-bearing angels is part of the tradition of polychrome woodcarving workshops run by specialized artisans who created figures intended to be painted in a “marble-effect” style and embellished with pure gold details to simulate preciousness and splendor without the cost of precious materials. The pair presented here retains the decorative charm and sculptural quality typical of these sacred furnishings.
