Japanese Statue 19th Century
Japanese folk art statue in lacquered polychrome wood with sulfide eyes.
Japanese folk art Edo / Meiji period
This Japanese sculpture depicts a popular male character with an expressive, deliberately caricatured face. Standing in an animated posture, the figure adopts an energetic stance, with left arm raised and fist clenched. The treatment of the face - marked cheeks, accentuated smile, lively gaze - testifies to the Japanese taste for theatrical and narrative figures inspired by folklore or the performing arts.
The sculpture is made of carved wood, then covered with polychrome lacquer in reddish-brown tones, with some green and black highlights visible on the belt and garment.
Note traces of wear, rubbing and missing polychromy.
