Vincenzo Gemito (1852–1929) Silver-plated Bronze Medallion Of Alexander The Great

Artist: Vincenzo Gemito
A silver-plated bronze medallion depicting the profile of Alexander the Great. The bronze is signed by the artist "Gemito" and also bears the foundry's mark, clearly legible with the inscription "Fonderie Gemito," circa 1920.
Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, July 16, 1852 – Naples, March 1, 1929) was an Italian sculptor, draftsman, and goldsmith. Largely self-taught and averse to academic conventions, Gemito developed his craft by drawing inspiration from the alleys of Naples’ historic center and the sculptures in the archaeological museum. His prolific artistic career, which brought him to the height of success at the Paris Salons in 1876–77, was interrupted by a profound intellectual crisis, causing him to withdraw from the world for eighteen years; He resumed public life only in 1909, and passed away twenty years later. Gemito’s body of work includes vigorous drawings, terracotta figures, and a large number of sculptures, all depicting Neapolitan folk scenes with great pictorial intensity; Among his major works are *Il Pescatorello*, *L’Acquaiolo* (the original silver cast is housed at the Cenedese Museum in Vittorio Veneto), the statue of Charles V on the facade of the Royal Palace of Naples, *La Zingara*, and his self-portraits.
Our medallion is part of a series influenced by his frequent visits to the Archaeological Museum of Naples. Exquisitely chiseled and of refined quality, it has the distinction of bearing, in addition to the signature, the seal of his foundry, which guarantees its authenticity, as Gemito was one of the most imitated sculptors in Italy.
