Height: 70 cm Weight: 16 kg.
Our model bears similarities to several figures by Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738-1814), and his most famous pupil, Joseph-Charles Marin (1759-1834). The earliest of these is a life-size marble statue by Clodion, which was part of a series of four mytho-allegorical statues commissioned by the Count of Artois, the future Charles X, in 1782.
(A. Poulet and G. Scherf, Clodion: 1738-1814, exh. cat., Paris, 1992, no. 52).
Our figure presented here is very similar to the latter in its swaying pose, evoking the intoxication of the bacchante, its face raised, its mouth open in sensual exaltation, and its drapery revealing its breast. The differences in modeling and composition indicate that our bronze is the work of a skilled follower, well-versed in Clodion's style.
