Kuba Carpet. Caucasus. Late 19th Century. 193 X 120 Cm
A superb Kuba rug from Azerbaijan in the Caucasus. Its decorative style is characteristic of late 19th-century rugs, as is its color palette.
In the central field, two large central medallions stand out. In the Caucasian tradition, they represent the sacred organization of space, the home, or the clan. Each medallion features five rosettes arranged in a cross pattern and complemented by other stylized floral motifs. The medallions are surrounded by stepped, crenellated motifs designed to protect the family.
Also within the central field, one can appreciate the presence of four Caucasian Guls arranged in three distinct bands, symbolizing family, descendants, and the passing down of traditions.
All around the field is a magnificent, unbroken border of intertwined hook motifs symbolizing protection. This forms an impenetrable protective barrier that shelters all members of the family.
The knotted weave is flat, typical of 19th-century Caucasian rugs. Wool over wool. Exclusively plant-based dyes in deep, luminous tones: madder red, indigo blue, ivory, and ochre yellow.
The piece is both light and supple—it’s sensational.
With its rather compact dimensions, this Kuba or Quba rug illuminates the space with its splendor and refinement.
Circa 1880
