A large bronze sculpture depicting an ancient (Olympic) victor on horseback, holding a laurel wreath. It is the work of the famous Austrian sculptor Ferdinand Luegerth (1885–1915), who lived and worked in Vienna.
In 1911, he exhibited a bronze sculpture titled “Defense” at the anniversary exhibition of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. In 1915, he received, along with Adolf Thomas (a Viennese architect), a prize of 1,000 crowns for a project titled “Debt of Honor,” inspired by Achilles.
Luegerth’s bronze statuettes are in the Art Nouveau style and often depict female and male nudes, frequently associated with mythological subjects, sometimes embellished with motifs of horses or dogs. Other works of his feature chryselephantine elements.
Inscription: signed Ferd. Lugerth and marked “AR,” the famous Viennese foundry “Arthur Rubinstein”; bronze, dark brown patina. Latin inscription on the base: “Labori Laurus!” (Laurel of Labor).
