Kazak Rug. Caucasus. Circa 1900. 215 X 152 Cm
The size is ideal—quite compact—and the proportions are unusual.
This is a Kazak rug listed under the name "Tovuz." In reality, it is the work of the Armenian people. This origin is significant, and one can observe a tight, precise knot, a sort of virtuosity in the weaving.
The composition is classic, featuring three medallions set against a central field of Caucasian midnight blue. Within this design, numerous small motifs appear, such as rosettes, stars, and animal motifs.
Three borders frame the field with a continuous water motif.
What is remarkable and characteristic of early Kazakh productions is, of course, the very high quality of the hand-spun wool.
It is precisely this almost silky quality of the wool that gives the colors their full luminosity and depth.
We speak of purity. The harmony is subtle, and a soothing gentleness prevails. A deep night at the center and a day full of energy and vitality.
Circa 1900.
Very good condition, with a few skillfully executed and very discreet restorations. I mention this because the piece has just come out of our restoration workshop, and it was a true joy to see this iconic piece reborn.
