Paris, 1820–38, Solid Silver And Vermeil, Jean-pierre Famechon, Pair Of Cruets, Ampullae
Artist: Jean-pierre Famechon 1787-1856
A magnificent pair of solid silver and vermeil cruets dating from the Restoration period, crafted by the renowned silversmith Jean-Pierre Famechon (1787–1856). He was the son of Jean-Baptiste Famechon and, like his father, established his workshop on the Quai des Orfèvres.
His hallmark was engraved in 1820 and largely mirrors that of his father. Some sources mention him as a silversmith for the King’s treasury, but I have found no official records to corroborate this. What is certain is that he specialized primarily in religious silverwork. The Treasury of Notre-Dame in Paris displays a magnificent reliquary of his making, containing relics of the True Cross and a genuine nail from the Passion of Christ.
This pair of cruets and their original tray are crafted from sterling silver, covered with a thick layer of vermeil that is still fairly uniform on both cruets but shows some signs of wear on the bottom of the tray.
The flasks are engraved with "À" and "V" to indicate wine (Vinum) and water (Aqua).
The style of the set is entirely inspired by the Louis XVI style, like many religious objects from the Restoration period.
The set weighs nearly 600 grams.
