Ghent 1818-1829, Pair Of Charles X Torches, Sterling Silver , Livinus De Bast, Candleholders
Artist: Livinus De Bast Actif 1818- 1829
Delightful pair of Directoire-style torches in solid silver (934%) dating from the period 1818-1829. They bear the guarantee hallmarks of the Ghent Bureau de Contrôle for the period 1814-1831 and the master goldsmith hallmark of Livinus de Bast, one of Ghent's most fashionable goldsmiths during this period of great economic prosperity.
The style and typology of these superb torches are inspired by Roman antiquity and the Doric columns of classical temples, which were taken up with great success by architects at the end of the eighteenth century.
This model of torch is rather rare in Parisian production, but enjoyed considerable success with Ghent silversmiths and their clientele from 1790.
They are both classically beautiful and timeless. At 27 cms high, they are rather large and perfect for garnishing a long Charles X or Louis-Philippe table.
