Pair of neoclassical candlesticks in solid sterling silver

An elegant pair of solid sterling silver candlesticks crafted in London in 1898 by the renowned firm Mappin & Webb.

Inspired by the Neoclassical style, their design is fully in keeping with the Adam style, which was highly popular in England in the late 19th century. Each candlestick rests on a slightly domed square base, edged with a row of beads and adorned with delicate drapery suspended from ribbon bows, extended by cords finished with tassels. This same motif of garlands and drapery continues up the slender shaft.

The column culminates in a remarkable Corinthian capital, richly carved with acanthus leaves, volutes, and garlands, supporting a square candelabrum base with slightly concave sides. The candlestick tops, also accented by a beaded frieze, are removable.

The set strikes a beautiful balance between the architectural rigor of classical design and the delicate ornamentation characteristic of English Neoclassicism. The slender shape of the columns, combined with the richness of the chiseled decoration, gives this pair a particularly decorative presence on a table, console, or mantelpiece.

The hallmarks are perfectly legible: the Mappin & Webb maker’s mark, the leopard’s head of the London Assay Office, the passant lion for 925/1000 sterling silver, and the date letter corresponding to 1898.
