The timpani rest on a molded pedestal, the base of the body decorated with gadroons. The lightly hammered upper part is engraved with fillets and flares out over the rim.
There is a pair of small timpani and a larger one.
The timpani are of very fine quality, crafted in the traditional style, hammer-mounted on a thick, dense silver sheet. The timpani are hallmarked: Minerva, 1st grade, before 1973 for 950/°° silver. Silversmith's mark: AF with a star in a square for Auger Frères.
The firm of Auger was founded in 1870 by Alphonse Auger, who created very luxurious jewelry, including the Diamond Jubilee Cross of Pope Leo XIII. Upon his death in 1904, the company was taken over by his two sons, brothers Georges and Emile. In 1907, Georges took over the Froment-Meurice house. This forgotten house had always been a hallmark of quality, as evidenced by its jewelry and then goldsmithing production, a fact confirmed by the takeover of the famous Froment-Meurice house.
This set of timpani is of first-class quality, very heavy for their size.
