Chateau De Cangé: Seal In Agate And Solid Silver / Vermeil From The 19th Century.

Superb and interesting agate and vermeil seal.

The baluster-shaped handle is made of beautiful brown and gray banded agate.

The vermeil rocaille-style matrix is engraved: Château de Cangé.

The Château de Cangé was built in the 18th century on the banks of the Cher River, in what is now the Indre-et-Loire department.
After a turbulent history, it now belongs to the town, which has converted it into a media library.

The château was notably owned by Maurice Cottier, a painter and art collector, between 1856 and 1881, the year of his death. He is likely the one who commissioned our seal, which corresponds to the style of the period and Mr. Cottier's profile.

The matrix is not hallmarked but has been tested with a touchstone.

7.3 cm high.

31.54 grams

Very good condition. The matrix is slightly misaligned with the handle.
