Pair Of Meiji-period Imari Vases, Mounted On Bronze Bases, 19th Century
An elegant pair of Imari-style Japanese porcelain vases, made during the Meiji period in the second half of the 19th century.
Baluster-shaped with a slightly tapered neck, these vases feature a fluted body whose ribs harmoniously structure the decoration into four broad main panels. These are adorned with rich floral compositions combining plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, stylized foliage, fences, and garden elements rendered in the traditional Imari palette, blending cobalt blue underglaze, iron red, and gold highlights.
The decorative panels are separated by vertical bands richly adorned with plant and geometric motifs. The neck is highlighted by broad floral bands, while the lower section is encircled by a frieze of stylized petals painted in cobalt blue, a characteristic feature of Imari porcelain intended for export. The balance of colors, the delicacy of the design, and the abundance of gold highlights attest to the care taken in their execution.
The vases rest on elegant openwork gilded bronze bases inspired by traditional Chinese display stands. These bases feature a design composed of geometric scrollwork, architectural cutouts, and stylized scrolls evoking the balustrades and latticework of Far Eastern decorative art. Created in the late 19th century, they perfectly illustrate the European fascination with the arts of Japan and China, then at the heart of the Japonism movement.
As is customary for this type of decorative mounting, the bottoms of the vases were drilled to allow them to be secured to the bases. This historical modification, made during their mounting, is part of the object’s history and reflects its adaptation to late 19th-century decorative tastes.
The combination of Japanese porcelain and gilded bronze gives the ensemble a particularly refined decorative presence. The bases elegantly enhance the proportions of the vases and highlight the richness of their polychrome decoration.
The porcelain is in perfect condition. Very slight wear on the gilding of the mounts, consistent with their age.
Dimensions:
Total height: 35 cm
Diameter at the base: 24 cm
