Pair Of Gilded Bronze Candelabra Featuring Bacchus Children, From The Napoleon III Period.
An elegant pair of gilded bronze candelabra from the Napoleon III period, featuring rich Rococo decoration inspired by the Louis XV ornamental style.
Resting on widely openwork bases composed of scrolls of foliage, vine tendrils, and grape clusters, these candelabra feature a particularly cohesive design centered on the theme of the vineyard and Bacchanalian festivities. The flowing legs are adorned with acanthus leaves, vine shoots, and finely chiseled grape clusters that extend all the way up to the candle arms.
Each candelabrum features a childlike figure in the round. One depicts a young boy wearing a vine wreath and holding a syrinx, the famous Pan flute composed of several pipes. The other depicts a young girl carrying a bunch of grapes. These two figures belong to the traditional world of Bacchus, god of wine, abundance, and the pleasures of nature.
The shafts, carved with asymmetrical movements, support four lights: three scalloped arms surrounding a central lamp.
The ensemble is adorned with garlands of flowers, vine leaves, and hanging bunches of grapes, the quality of whose carving attests to the care taken in their execution.
The candelabra retain their two original removable snuffers, an accessory that is rarely preserved today. Crafted in gilded bronze and topped with a bird in the round perched on a bouquet of flowers, they fully contribute to the ensemble’s refinement while evoking its original function.
This pair is distinguished by the quality of its casting, the finesse of its engraving, and the excellent condition of its original gilding. The faces of the figures, the rendering of the drapery, the birds’ plumage, the veins of the leaves, and the modeling of the clusters reveal particularly meticulous craftsmanship.
Original mounting preserved. The central brackets were originally drilled to allow for electrification, which has since been removed; this historical modification affects only the top lights, as the side arms remain intact.
