A pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Henry d’Estienne ranks among the most active French Orientalist painters of the first half of the twentieth century.
Appointed painter to the French Ministry of Colonies in 1900, he travelled extensively through Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt, countries that would provide lasting inspiration throughout his career.
This small painting depicts a North African interior courtyard centred around a well, a column and a series of sunlit arcades.
The composition appears to have been executed without visible preliminary drawing, using rapid and fluid brushstrokes. D’Estienne’s focus is above all on light and atmosphere, which he captures with remarkable spontaneity.
More than a carefully finished studio composition, the work retains the character of a genuine travel painting. Its light handling and freedom of execution preserve the freshness of a scene observed directly and recorded on the spot.
Awarded a medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 and later honoured at the Paris International Exposition of 1937, Henry d’Estienne is today represented in major French public collections, including the Musée d’Orsay and the French Senate.
This small panel provides a particularly appealing testimony to his Orientalist work and to his vision of North Africa.
