Pair of Maiolica Plates with Pagodas, Felice Clerici Manufacture, Milan, c. 1750-1770
Rare pair of 18th-century Milanese maiolica plates, attributable to the Felice Clerici manufacture, with refined chinoiserie decoration in cobalt blue, iron red and gold.
Diameter: 23 cm each.
The composition belongs to the Orientalist Lombard repertoire of the mid-18th century: small Eastern figures, pagodas with tall pinnacles, stylized rocks, coral-like branches and fantastic trees are arranged in a very airy layout, with broad areas left in white.
This type of decoration is traditionally associated with the Milanese manufacture of Felice Clerici, active from around 1745 until the 1770s. For some comparable services, scholars also mention the name of Pasquale Rubati, active in Milan in the second half of the 18th century and close, in repertoire and taste, to Clerici production.
The two plates show fine painting, with a quick yet controlled line and high-quality finishing. The gilding is richer and more present than on many comparable examples.
Very good overall condition, with only minor signs of age consistent with the period. The decoration remains fresh, well preserved and highly decorative.
