Madonna And Child Attributed To Charles Dauphin

Artist: Charles Dauphin
Madonna and Child attributed to CHARLES DAUPHIN (Metz 1620–Turin 1677), gilded wood frame, 17th-century Franco-Piedmontese school, attribution confirmed by ARABELLA CIFANI, art expert and historian at the Court of Turin.
The composition depicts the Virgin and the Infant Jesus in a gesture of great intimacy. The pearly complexions of the faces, the rosy lips, and the rendering of the drapery directly recall the tradition of SIMON VOUET, whose pupil CHARLES DAUPHIN was in PARIS before becoming one of the principal painters at the Court of Savoy in Turin.
CHARLES DAUPHIN, originally from Lorraine, settled in Turin around 1650 and worked for the House of Savoy. He completed numerous religious and decorative commissions and became one of the leading figures in 17th-century Piedmontese painting.
The attribution by ARABELLA CIFANI is significant, as she is one of the recognized specialists in 17th-century Piedmontese painting.
