A pair of royal red granite planters, Consulate period, early 19th century, circa 1810.
A rare, monumental pair, circular in shape and inspired by the Neoclassical style.*
The bowls, with a flared profile, feature a wide molded rim and a carved decoration of gadroons and stylized leaves.
They are flanked by two substantial openwork side handles, crafted from the same material and forming an elegant continuity with the body.
The basins rest on sturdy, molded pedestals composed of several circular registers, set upon slightly curved shafts topped with circular bases featuring moldings.
The entire ensemble rests on quadrangular plinths made of royal red granite.
The granite, which is particularly rich in color, displays a beautiful pinkish-red hue speckled with gray and black—a characteristic of the decorative granite used in grand Italian mansions and aristocratic gardens.
These planters were intended for use in the interior or garden of an aristocratic residence.
