Orthodox Folding Triptych, Virgin And Child, Greece Or The Balkans, 18th Century

An antique Orthodox triptych with wooden panels painted in tempera and gilded highlights, depicting on the central panel the Virgin and Child according to the Hodigitria iconography, surrounded by two saints depicted on the side panels.

The Virgin, her face radiating gentleness and contemplation, presents the blessing Child seated on her lap. The side panels feature two saints with halos, one of whom is crowned and holding a cross—likely a martyred queen or empress.

The reverse side of the panels bears a large Orthodox cross accompanied by the traditional Greek inscription:

IC XC NIKA

meaning:

“Jesus Christ is the Victor”

This phrase, frequently found in Orthodox religious art, underscores the devotional purpose of the work.

The piece as a whole displays beautiful antique polychromy dominated by deep reds, muted greens, and gilded backgrounds. The faces are rendered with finesse in the late Byzantine tradition.

The antique wooden frame retains its wrought-iron hinges and features an authentic patina as well as signs of wear consistent with its age.

A work in the Greek or Balkan tradition, likely created between the late 17th century and the 18th century.

A very beautiful object of private devotion—decorative and imbued with spirituality—that attests to the enduring presence of Byzantine iconographic models in the Orthodox world.
