According To Francesco Guarino. The Virgin Mary Nursing The Baby Jesus
Artist: Francesco Guarino ( D'après)
In the late 18th or early 19th century, travelers on the Grand Tour passing through Naples could not fail to visit the royal art collections at the Reggia di Capodimonte
. There, they particularly admired this *Madonna and Child*, painted in the mid-17th century by Francesco Guarino (1611–1654), a prominent Neapolitan painter.
They could then commission a smaller-scale copy of this work, which was little known outside the Kingdom of Naples.
The piece we are presenting here is remarkably painted—the gentleness of the Virgin’s face, the rendering of the velvet in her gown, and her elegant hands all attest to great mastery. The serenity of the scene allowed collectors of the time to both take home a high-quality memento of their journey and preserve an object of devotion for their private oratory.
The broad craquelure allows the painting to be dated between 1780 and 1830.
It is in a remarkable state of preservation and has certainly never been cleaned.
The custom-made frame is original and in good condition, though it shows some minor chips typical of its age.
It is a testament to what a wealthy traveler might have taken with him to commemorate what was the journey of a lifetime
