Oil on canvas, "Praying Virgin"
mid-17th century
by / or workshop of Giovan Battista Salvi, known as Il Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato 1609–Rome 1685)
The Virgin called Addolorata, also known as the Virgin in Prayer, is an iconic painting by Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato. The Virgin in Prayer is an example of how Salvi captured the beauty and spiritual depth of the Virgin with Child, using iconographic elements and religious motifs to create a work that evokes serenity and contemplation. This painting is a testament to Salvi's mastery in the field of religious painting and his commitment to representing subjects of faith and devotion. The powerful role of light, centered on the Virgin's face, and the subtle halo surrounding her bust, contrasted with a plain, uniform, and abstract background, as well as rather dark clothing, will always be noticeable. Here, it is indeed the expression of the Virgin that is the central theme of the work. The painter Giovanni Battista Salvi gained great fame as the quintessential painter of Madonnas. Indeed, his work, which was mainly devoted to religion, includes stunning depictions of the Virgin Mary that were very successful with religious institutions and major private patrons, thanks to the delicacy of the facial features, the skillful use of light, and the purity of the colors. In any case, Sassoferrato's style shows that he took from his masters the discipline of the great Italian classical painters of the Renaissance.
