"Popular Songs By Charles Nisard, Two Volumes. 1867"
Charles Nisard (1808-1889) is a singular character. Undersecretary at the Ministry of Police in the 1850s, responsible for censorship, he used his position to build up a remarkable collection of popular works, for the purpose of linguistic study. He was indeed a distinguished philologist, publishing numerous works, notably on Parisian slang. Here it is a study of popular songs throughout history, since antiquity. It also includes songs from his time. He was received at the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles Lettres in 1875. Half brown binding, in good condition (to be waxed), foxing on the paper, otherwise good condition.
