Asia: 19th Century Rice Basket
Lovely rice basket, in lacquered bamboo and decorated with golden fish, bronze flowers, and calligraphy on the handle and inside the lid. An elegant wrought bronze ring is certainly intended to hang the box out of reach of greedy rodents. The discreet refinement, the transparency of the lacquer, gives a common object a timeless charm. Is it Chinese, probably, rice being the unifying element of all Asian cultures.
