Very fine painting by Robert William Jivanovitch dit Jiva, depicting a Basque house probably near Ascain. Oil on panel, signed Jiva lower right. Dimensions without frame13.5 x 20.5 cm.
The painter, Jiva(1907-1974) was a Russian-born draftsman, illustrator, caricaturist and painter. He was active in the mid-twentieth century, mainly in Biarritz, where many of his compatriots, having fled the Russian revolution of 1917, were to be found. He was more than ignored by Biarrots during his active years. Jiva devoted himself to painting Basque landscapes, scenes of life and portraits. His work can be admired at the Musée Basque in Bayonne, which owns several of his works. Jiva died in 1974 in Biarritz.
