Artist: from experience, I'd say an eastern painter, probably a penniless Jewish migrant who passed through the "Bateau Lavoir" and saw the work of Pablo Picasso (from the blue and pink period) and the work of Chiam Soutine
Subject: The madman dressed as Pierrot on a blue-tinted background (the brushstroke is feverishly colored with broad, material brushstrokes )personally, I find this work mesmerizing, a real discovery....
* and here's the "rub" ** the signature at the top left contemporary with the work is made in the paste and is difficult to read, although it could be Cyrillic writing? ( see photo )
