** biography : Zdzisław Przebindowski (Krakow 1902-1986) was a Polish painter, professor at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts and vice-president of the Krakow Society of Friends of Fine Arts. Born into a family of artists, his great-uncle Józef Przebindowski was a sculptor and his father, Franciszek Przebindowski, a painter. Zdzisław Przebindowski first exhibited at the Jan III Sobieski High School in Krakow, where he was a pupil. In 1920, he began his studies at the School of Decorative Arts and Artistic Industry in Poznań. In 1925, he returned to Krakow and entered the Academy of Fine Arts (in F. Pautsch's studio), from which he graduated with honors (National Culture Fund scholarship). After his studies, he moved to Paris for a time. He then lived and worked in Venice, Florence and Rome. He also visited the African coast. In late 1937 and early 1938, he returned to Krakow and began teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts, but his teaching was interrupted by the Second World War. He returned to the university in 1945, where he worked until 1972. He painted landscapes, genre scenes, still lifes and portraits. He was active in numerous organizations and associations (including the Sztuka Society, the Fine Arts Society and the Association of Polish Visual Artists). He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. His works are held by the National Museum in Krakow, the National Museum in Poznań, the Museum of Opole Silesia, the Museum of Grudziądz and private collections. In 1996, a Krakow street was named after him.
