Ohan Baghdassarian (1869–1948) – The Stone Bridge, 1906

A beautiful oil on cardboard by the Armenian artist Ohan Baghdassarian (1869–1948), depicting an old stone bridge spanning a lush green landscape. Dated 1906 and signed in the lower left corner, this work captivates with its soft light, its delicate palette of greens, blues, and grays, and its free and expressive brushwork. The composition depicts an old stone bridge, built of large, irregular stones, spanning a small body of water. The path continues beyond the bridge through lush vegetation, while a stone structure appears discreetly at the top of the hill. According to the inscription on the back, the scene is near Djulanack on the Djab River.

Baghdassarian places great emphasis on texture and light. The foliage is rendered with a succession of quick, colorful brushstrokes, while the stones of the bridge and the riverbanks are depicted in a range of grays, mauves, and earthy tones.
