Shiwan Ware, 19th-century Guangdong: The woman and her lionesses. The glaze is very thick and very heavy for its size.
Symbol: Numerous Offspring and Lineage (Zishi Changmian): In China, a large family is a sure sign of blessing and wealth. The cubs playing and climbing on the adult lionesses symbolize a prosperous, vigorous, and united lineage spanning several generations.
Size: 31 cm H, 27 cm L
The glaze is very thick and bright; one of the legs has a raised edge beneath its base to prevent the piece from breaking during firing. The object is quite heavy for its size, a sign of its age.
* Note that one of the legs has a small crack on the back. I prefer to leave the object in its original condition.
