Two-body Lacquered And Gilt Chinoiserie Trumeau. Venice, First Half Of The 18th Century.
Two-body lacquered and gilt chinoiserie trumeau. Venice, first half of the 18th century.
105 x 54 x h 245 cm.
A two-body trumeau made in Venice around the 1740s–1750s, particularly prized for its exceptional black-ground lacquer with gilt chinoiserie decoration, embodying the combination of Venetian cabinet-making mastery and Oriental influence. The lower body features a shaped front with three drawers and a fall-front writing surface concealing a series of small drawers and secret compartments; the upper body, with two mirrored doors, opens to a series of shelves and compartments intended for porcelain and documents. The crowning pediment, decorated in keeping with the rest of the piece, is enriched by exceptionally fine carving, comparable in quality to the finest contemporary Venetian gilt mirrors. A further distinguishing feature is provided by the interiors, entirely lacquered and painted in tortoiseshell imitation, an exceptionally rare detail in Venetian production of the period.
