Mixed media drawing on paper, in wooden frame. Signed and dated lower right: «Migneco 46».
Giuseppe Migneco is one of the most distinctive figures in 20th-century Italian art, active between Messina and Milan, where he came into contact with the Corrente movement and developed a highly expressive visual language. His work is characterised by a nervous, incisive line capable of conveying psychological tension and popular humanity with great economy of means.
In this 1946 drawing, a fortune teller is depicted studying cards laid out on a table, her hands clasped before her face in a gesture of concentration. The ink line, rapid and assured, constructs the figure's face with the expressive directness typical of the artist's finest graphic work: the deep-set eyes and fixed gaze give the subject an almost theatrical intensity. In the background, a few swift marks suggest an interior without defining it, leaving the full compositional weight on the central figure.
