A rare decorative plate in wood, a fine example of the Piedmontese lacca povera tradition of the 18th century. The technique involved the application of small hand-coloured engravings onto a wooden support, subsequently sealed with transparent varnish layers as an economical alternative to costly Oriental lacquerware. The decoration is arranged in concentric registers: at the centre, within a roundel on a turquoise ground, a bucolic landscape with trees and architectural elements; in the intermediate band on a vermilion ground, four large polylobed cartouches enclose architectural capriccios with bridges, obelisks and ruins, enriched by naturalistic elements. The outer band repeats the same repertoire in smaller format, within gilded reserves on a red ground.
