Workshop of Pietro Longhi (Venice 1702 – Venice 1785) - The Declaration of Love.

71.5 x 55.5 cm.

Oil on canvas, unframed.

The painting reproduces Pietro Longhi's Declaration of Love (Venice 1702 – Venice 1785), a work now lost and documented through a reverse engraving by Jean-Baptiste Flipart.

Pietro Longhi was the leading interpreter of genre painting in eighteenth-century Venice, renowned for his sharp and affectionate observation of the customs and rituals of Venetian society. His interior scenes, conversations, visits, card games and amorous encounters, unfold in bourgeois or aristocratic settings, populated by elegantly dressed or masked figures.
The scene shows a lady seated at the centre, fan in hand, receiving the visit of several figures, some wearing the characteristic Venetian bauta mask, in an interior with a canopied bed in the background. Longhi's workshop replicated the master's compositions with variants to meet the widespread collecting demand of eighteenth-century Venice.
