The view depicts Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo with the Dominican basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, known in Venetian dialect as San Zanipolo, and, on the left, the Scuola Grande di San Marco. In the foreground, a gondola with two gondoliers animates the canal, while the figures crossing the campo belong to the tradition of 19th-century genre painting. The architectural rendering is precise and documentary: the brick Gothic façade of the basilica, the polychrome rose window, the Gothic pinnacles, and the apsidal dome are rendered with careful perspectival accuracy. The equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni by Verrocchio is visible in the background. The work belongs to the Venetian vedutist tradition of the 19th century, with a luminous palette and the diffused light characteristic of the lagoon.
