Artist: Laurent Gsell
Laurent Gsell. Oil on canvas "belles roses fraichement coupées" signed lower right Laurent Gsell. French school. 54X 40cm.
Laurent Lucien Gsell (1860-1944) studied with Caspar Gsell (1814-1904), his father, and Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
He exhibited from 1882 to 1908 at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français and from 1909 to 1920 at the Salon de la Société Nationale, portraits, genre paintings and scenes from the life of the people, subjects from Sudan and the Azores.
The Musée de Vannes (Morbihan) owns an unusual painting in his oeuvre, "Le Laboratoire de Pasteur" (1886) (Sources: Bénézit dictionnaire des peintres et sculpteurs. Dictionnaire Schur des petits Maîtres de la peinture).
Our painting is a brilliant example of Laurent Gsell's talent who, with a soft palette and a lively touch, gives these roses an eternal freshness.
