Jules Ausset (1868-1955) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) under Charles Lhuillier (1824-1898). Jules Ausset, a member of the Cercle de l'Art Moderne (Circle of Modern Art), frequented the circles of Othon Friesz (1879-1949), Raoul Dufy (1877-1953), and Georges Braque (1882-1963). Our painting is a distillation of Ausset's work, demonstrating that when he painted the natural wonders of Brittany, his talent rivaled that of his contemporaries and colleagues, Henry Moret (1856-1913) and Maxime Maufra (1861-1918). Our rocks of Ploumanac'h could easily be displayed in the grandest museums alongside Moret's Île de Groix (1906-1908) or Maufra's Marine at Donant, Belle-Île-en-Mer (1909), without being ashamed of the enthusiastic praise he received from art lovers.
